One of the great advantages of a handmade Stonewall Saddle is our ability to build it to fit your horse.  Give us a call and we’ll make it simple for you, here’s how:

Fitting a saddle to your horse can be broken down into two steps:

1) Macro-fitting - Your horses back is measured and we select a tree that matches your horse and custom fit the bars if needed.  And,

2) Micro-fitting - The conformal foam, under the saddle tree,  does this job by shaping itself to your horses back and fine tuning the fit.

The Card System allows us to build a simple 3D model of your horse, store the data in a database, and track how a horse changes shape with age and conditioning.  It also allows us to tell you how to shim a saddle pad if you will be using the saddle on multiple horses.  The Cards can be purchased directly from the web site of our mate  Dennis Lane from Down Under, or you may borrow ours.  The summary pictures below will give you the basic idea or give us a call if you have more questions & we will walk you thru it.

LINE TRACING INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR HORSE

Here is an example of what your line tracings will look like, only much larger - the size of your horse.  If you need help, call us at 951-834-5844.

If you rent the Card System kit from us we also include the materials for you to trace your horse's back.

Start by finding low point of back

Date __________

Name _________

Age ___________

1)   Gather the following supplies:

- 20 inch long piece of soldering wire (or similar wire that will not spring back when bent)

- Paper - large piece (back of wrapping paper works fine)

- Pen/pencil - felt tip pen works best

- Masking tape

- Measuring tape

2) Lay a piece of tape along your horses spine from top of withers to beyond the hip bone.

3) Mark the ‘low point of back’ on the tape by eyeballing for it with your horse standing square on level ground.

4) Mark three inch intervals on the tape from the ‘low point of back’ forward and to the rear.  Label the marks “1, 2, 3, ...”  You will take a tracing at each of these marks - about 6 to 7 of them.

5) Make a tracing at each mark.  Place the midpoint of the wire on the horses spine at one of your tape marks, and bend it to match your horse’s back by pushing it down onto the horse.  Do your best to keep the wire vertical (up & down).  Remove the wire carefully so as to not disturb its shape and lay it on your paper.  Trace the inside of the wire onto the paper.  Label the position number next to the tracing.  Repeat for each mark.

6) Write the date, horse’s name, age, primary use, and your contact information on the paper.  Draw an arrow showing which end is the front of the horse.

7) Mail your tracing to us along with two pictures of your horse:

a)Side view with head up, and b) Rear view from above.

For many years line tracings were the only way to convey measurement info to the saddle maker and we will still build a saddle from line tracings.  Note that tracings do not provide Rock/Sway nor length of back information.  The more careful and accurate you are, the better job we can do with fit.
